Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
Headache
Rash
Blurred vision
Blood disorders
Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
Abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias)
Low blood pressure (hypotension)
Fever (pyrexia)
Sensation of ringing, or other noise in the ears (tinnitus)
Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
There may be an increased risk of slow heart rate, heart block and myocardial depression (decreased impulses within the heart) when used with other anti-arrhythmic medicines.
There may be an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythm (ventricular arrhythmias) when taken with the following:-
- sotolol
- other anti-arrhythmics e.g. procainamide
- tricyclic antidepressants e.g. amitriptyline
- antihistamines e.g. terfenadine and astemizole
- antimalarials e.g. mefloquine, chloroquine, quinine
- antipsychotics e.g. thioridazine, pimozide and sertindole
- cisapride
Quinidine increases the blood levels of digoxin (digoxin dose should be halved if taken with quinidine), digitoxin and metoprolol.
Quinidine also increases the levels of the tricyclic antidepressants - desipramine and imipramine, resulting in additive anti-arrhythmic effects. These medicines should not be taken together.
The following medicines increase the blood levels of quinidine:-
amiodarone, verapamil, cimetidine.
The following medicines decrease the blood levels of quinidine:-
phenytoin, rifampicin and barbituates such as primidone and phenobarbital.
Nifedipine may increase or decrease the blood levels of quinidine.
This medicine may cause changes in the effects of anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin.
Other medicines containing the same active ingredient
There are currently no other medicines available in the UK that contain quinidine as the active ingredient.
