How can this medicine affect other medicines?
Rifampicin and phenobarbital increase the rate of removal of chloramphenicol from the body, thereby reducing it's effectiveness.
Chloramphenicol may alter the blood thinning effects anticoagulants such as warfarin and nicoumalone.
Chloramphenicol causes increased levels of phenytoin and cyclosporin in the blood which may be potentially toxic.
Chloramphenicol may decrease the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.
Chloramphenicol increases the blood levels of tolbutamide and chlopropamide (antidiabetic medication), causing a decrease in blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia).
Chloramphenicol may cause a form of reversible bone marrow depression, which opposes the treatment of anaemia with iron or vitamin B12.
