Kaolin Mixture

How does it work?

Kaolin is an adsorbant medicine used to treat diarrhoea. It is not absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut, but instead binds to and traps bacteria and bacterial toxins in the gut. Bacteria are often the cause of diarrhoea, so kaolin works by removing them from the gut. Kaolin also binds to water in the gut, which helps to make the stools firmer.

What is it used for?

  • Diarrhoea
  • Warning!

  • Take with plenty of water
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • There is no information available regarding the safety of this medicine during breastfeeding. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
  • How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Kaolin may bind to many other medicines in the stomach or intestine. This can reduce their absorption into the bloodstream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines before taking kaolin, particularly the following: - antibiotics such as tetracycline, lincomycin, clindamycin - digoxin - chloroquine - quinidine - pseudoephedrine - procainamide. These interactions can usually be avoided by leaving a two hour gap between taking kaolin and any other medicines.
