How does it work?

Hydrocortisone belongs to a group of medicines known as corticosteroids. These act inside the cells to decrease the release of certain chemicals that are important in the immune system. These chemicals normally cause itch and inflammation. By decreasing the release of these chemicals in a particular area, itch and inflammation are reduced. Gentamicin is a member of the aminoglycoside family of antibiotics. These antibiotics have the ability to kill a wide variety of bacteria. Gentamicin binds to components in the bacterial cell which results in the production of abnormal proteins. These proteins are necessary for the bacteria's survival. The production of these abnormal proteins is ultimately fatal to the bacteria. Hydrocortisone with gentamicin is commonly used as ear-drops for the short-term treatment of inflammation and infection of the outer part of the ear canal (bacterial otitis externa).

What is it used for?

- Inflammation and infection of the outer part of the ear canal

Warning!

- Avoid prolonged use.
- Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids (including eye/ear/nose preparations) or application to large areas of skin, can result in sufficient absorption of the corticosteroid into the bloodstream to prevent the normal production of natural steroid hormones by the adrenal glands (adrenal suppression). This is more likely to occur in infants and children. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information.
- There is a risk the topical application of aminoglycoside antibiotics into the middle ear may cause hearing loss.
