Fletchers' Enemette

How does it work?

Docusate is a 'stimulant laxative', which acts on nerve endings in the gut wall. These nerves make the muscles in the intestine contract more frequently and with greater force. When the gut contracts it moves the gut contents along faster, therefore relieving constipation. It may also act to soften the faeces, by increasing the penetration of fluid into the faeces. As a result the faeces contain more water and are softer and easier to pass. Glycerol also acts to mildly irritate nerves in the gut wall. These nerves then make the muscles in the intestine contract harder and more often. This also assists in the relief of constipation.
