How can this medicine affect other medicines?
Pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine may decrease body folate levels if taken with the following medications:
-Methotrexate
-Phenytoin
-Co-trimoxazole
-Trimethoprim
Sulfadoxine increases the risk of kidney damage if this drug is taken with cyclosporin.
Sulfadoxine when given together with the antiepileptic drug phenytoin may increase the level of phenytoin in the blood and may also enhance the effects of the drug in lowering the levels of folic acid in the blood.
Sulfadoxine may increase the risk of developing a disturbed heart rhythm when given with amiodarone. These medicines should not be used together.
Sulfadoxine may increase the blood thinning effects of nicoumalone and warfarin.
Sulfadoxine may enhance the effect of sulphonylureas leading to low blood sugar levels.
Sulfadoxine when given together with methotrexate may enhance the antifolate effect of the two drugs and may lead to toxic side effects.
Sulfadoxine may reduce the effectiveness of the combined oral contraceptive pill.
