How does it work?
Ergometrine maleate belongs to a group of medicines called the ergot alkaloids.
What is it used for?
- Blood loss after child birth (postpartum haemorrhage)
Warning!
- Avoid use in pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure, protein in the urine and fluid retention in pregnancy).
- This medicine may cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery.
- Prolonged use may lead to gangrene.
Use with caution in
- Life long inherited blood diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias)
- More than one baby in the uterus (multiple pregnancy)
Not to be used in

Abdominal pain and bleeding during preganancy
- Blood poisoning (toxaemia) in pregnancy
- Children
- Decreased kidney function
- Decreased liver function
- Decreased lung function

Disease involving the blood vessels
- Elderly people

First and second stages of labour

Heart disease

High blood pressure
- Induction of labour
- Infection of the blood or body tissues with pus-forming or other pathogenic organisms (sepsis)
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.
- The use of this medicine is entirely restricted to the third stage of labour. It is otherwise not recommended for use in pregnancy. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
- The use of this medicine during breastfeeding is not recommended. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Confusion
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations)
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Sensation of ringing, or other noise in the ears (tinnitus)
- Chest pain (angina)
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- Difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea)
- Narrowing of the blood vessels in the extremities of the body (peripheral vasoconstriction)
- Chest pain
- Inadequate blood flow leading to low levels of oxygen in the tissues of the extremities (peripheral ischaemia), which may lead to gangrene
- Transient increase in blood pressure
