How can this medicine affect other medicines?
Tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Likewise, always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines during treatment with this one.
This medicine will enhance the effect of levodopa treatment. If you are already taking levodopa when you start this medicine, your doctor will need to decrease your levodopa dose in order to optimise the beneficial effects, but avoid enhanced side effects.
The painkiller pethidine should not be taken by people taking this medicine, as this combination can cause severe and potentially life-threatening reactions.
The painkiller tramadol may also potentially interact with this medicine and should only be used with caution.
This medicine should not be used in combination with the SSRI antidepressants fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline or fluvoxamine, or with the related antidepressant venlafaxine, as these combinations can cause serious side effects. Selegiline should not be started until at least two weeks after stopping these antidepressants and until at least five weeks after stopping fluoxetine.
Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline or imipramine should be used with caution in combination with this medicine, as on rare occasions this can cause serious adverse effects.
If this medicine is taken in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants such as phenelzine, tranylcypromine or isocarboxazid, or by people who have recently stopped taking one of these antidepressants, it may cause a large drop in blood pressure that causes dizziness or fainting.
People who are taking this medicine in combination with the antidepressant moclobemide should avoid eating foods that are rich in the amino acid tyramine, as these foods can cause a serious increase in blood pressure in people taking this combination of medicines. If you are taking moclobemide with this medicine, examples of foods to avoid are: cheese, yeast extracts (eg Oxo, Bovril, Marmite), flavoured textured vegetable protein, hung game, pickled herrings, dry sausage (salami, pepperoni etc), liver, yoghurt, broad beans, alcoholic drinks (or non-alcoholic beers, lagers or wines).
