Dioralyte relief

How does it work?

Dioralyte relief sachets contain rehydration salts consisting of carbohydrates and salts (pre-cooked rice powder, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and sodium citrate). They are used to replace body fluids lost as a result of acute diarrhoea.

Diarrhoea makes you lose more fluids and electrolytes (salts such as sodium and potassium) than you usually would and can make you dehydrated. Sachets of rehydration salts are used to replace body fluids lost as a result of diarrhoea. This is particularly important in frail and elderly people and children with diarrhoea.

The contents of the sachets are dissolved in water to provide the fluid. The carbohydrate (pre-cooked rice powder) that is in these sachets helps the water and electrolytes to be absorbed from the intestines.

The contents of each sachet should be dissolved in 200ml of fresh drinking water (for adults and children). Freshly boiled and cooled water should be used for infants and when fresh water is not available. The solution should be made up immediately before use and used within one hour. If refrigerated the solution may be kept for up to 24 hours.

What is it used for?

Replacement of lost fluids and electrolytes associated with acute diarrhoea.

Warning!

The contents of the sachets should only be mixed with water, as directed above. Make sure the correct amount of water is used.

Don't exceed the dose recommended in the leaflet provided with the medicine. Make sure you give the correct dose for children and babies.

Infants with severe diarrhoea and/or vomiting should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.

If symptoms persist for more than 36 hours, seek medical advice from a doctor.

Use with caution in

Kidney disease (including people who are producing very small amounts or no urine).

Liver disease.

People on a low sodium or potassium diet.

Severe and persistent diarrhoea and vomiting.

People who cannot drink or keep down fluids taken by mouth.

People with any of these problems should seek medical advice.

Not to be used in

Babies aged under three months.

Obstruction of the stomach or intestines.

Inherited disorder of protein metabolism called phenylketonuria (Dioralyte relief sachets contain aspartame).

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

This medicine can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
