Side effects

- Dry mouth
- Impotence
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Disturbance in the components of the blood
- Stuffy nose
- Depression
- Drowsiness
- Rash
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Fever (pyrexia)
- Dizziness

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Methyldopa increases the blood pressure lowering effects of anaesthetics and other antihypertensive medicines. If taken with lithium there is an increased risk of drowsiness and confusion (neurotoxicity) without the amount of lithium in the blood being raised.

Other medicines containing the same active ingredient

Methyldopa tablets are also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.
