How can this medicine affect other medicines?
When taken together with ACE inhibitors or potassium salts there is an increased risk of high blood potassium levels (hyperkalaemia) and the combination should be avoided.
Spironolactone increases the levels of cardiac glycosides such as digoxin in the blood and should be monitored regularly.
If a decrease in blood potassium levels (hypokalaemia) occurs with hydroflumethiazide, the adverse effects of cardiac glycosides such as digoxin may be increased.
Spironolactone decreases the ulcer healing effects of carbenoxolone.
Hydroflumethiazide reduces the ability of the body to remove lithium. As this can give rise to adverse effects, this medicine should not be taken with lithium.
Hydroflumethiazide when taken with large doses of Vitamin D and/or calcium may cause an increase in the levels of calcium in the blood. This may lead to adverse effects.
The effects of hydroflumethiazide may be reduced by indomethacin.
When taken together with other medicines such as the corticosteroids and carbenoxolone, which can cause a decrease in blood potassium levels (hypokalaemia), there may be an increased risk of developing hypokalaemia. Potassium supplements may be required.
