Hangovers - who needs them? (Contd)

Written by Colin Brennan, health journalist

Plan ahead

Professor Hammersley feels the best way to deal with hangovers, and drinking in general, is to plan ahead.

'We all know that when some people say: "I'll meet you for a drink." They really don't mean one drink. If it's going to be a heavy night, you need to plan how you are going to get home, but you should also plan for the after effects.

'It's obviously better if you don't have to work the next day, and you make sure you eat before the boozing starts.

'You will thank yourself the next day if you have small snacks throughout the evening and a drink of water with every glass of alcohol,' he says.

Once you get home, drink a pint of water before you go to bed.

The best medicine for a hangover is to be found in a bottle or glass: the one you didn't have. But given human nature, it's not a bad idea to leave the painkillers by the bed just in case.
