Erythema infectiosum (Contd)

Reviewed by Dr Dan Rutherford, GP

How is erythema infectiosum treated?
There is no treatment of the illness and it is a self-limiting condition.

Erythema infectiosum at work
Pregnant women should avoid places with an outbreak of erythema infectiosum due to the risk to the unborn baby.

More problematic are the cases of pregnant mothers with children in daycare. If a blood sample shows that the woman has never been infected with the parvovirus B19, she ought to stay at home with the child until the risk of infection has passed.
