Why do alcoholics have sexual problems?
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly why alcoholics have sexual
problems. The problem may be caused by the excess of alcohol itself or by other
factors in the unhealthy lifestyle of alcoholics. Sexual problems could also be
due to other disorders associated with alcoholism, such as
depression.
Can sexual problems be caused by Antabuse?
An experiment was carried out in which one half of a group of
alcoholics were given
Antabuse (a drug prescribed to combat
alcoholism) and the other half were given a placebo (tablets that have no
medical effect). The sex lives of the group given Antabuse were affected less
than the group given the placebo. Therefore, Antabuse cannot be blamed for
causing sexual problems.
How do I get help?
Alcoholism is a serious condition and people who drink
excessively should seek professional help. Only by admitting their problem, and
by receiving professional assistance, will they be able to become sober again.
Very few people can manage to help themselves. Any related sexual difficulties
can only be treated successfully once the abuse has stopped.
