The importance of setting space and time aside for the business is another key aspect of self-employment that people fail to appreciate. Within the limits set by the taxation issue, it is important to dedicate a room or at least an alcove, to the computer and paperwork: concentration can be elusive when there are domestic distractions around.

Careful time planning is also essential: however tempting, deny the urge to walk the dog or nip out to the shops during working hours. To assist concentration, some self-employed people also find it helpful to dress as they would to go to the office.

Many entrepreneurs eventually find they miss office routine and the company of colleagues. Joining business networking clubs run by either the local Business Link or Chamber of Commerce can help with ideas, motivation and marketing.
