Designing kids' bedrooms

By interiors expert Liz Dennys, September 2009

It is amazing how many things your children seem to want or need in their room but with clever planning and great space saving ideas, you’ll be amazed how much you can fit in.

My favourite space saving object is the IKEA laptop desk (pictured left) and with the dimensions of width: 60 cm, depth: 24 cm height: 45 cm – it can easily be included in the smallest of rooms. It’s not designed specifically for children but works perfectly well as a fold down desk for drawing, colouring and the dreaded homework. We love it as it doesn’t take up much room but when open adds a whole new aspect to any room.

Colours in children’s room can be tricky as they tend to want pinks, purples for girls and blues, greens for boys – but when doing a child’s bedroom, I tend to use a off white for wall colour, perhaps a wallpaper on 1 or 2 walls and then in the blinds or curtains give them the colours/designs or patterns they want – this minimizes the busyness of the palette but gives them some artistic freedom and choice. I love these for a boy’s room. They are both from Sandberg – the green wallpaper was used on two walls and the star fabric was the roman blind. It could easily be matched with high street buys too; Next do a great denim bean bag, BHS an inexpensive brick red lamp shade and IKEA a dark blue rug.
