Do the words interior design make you think of prestigious homes only attainable by the rich and famous? Then think again: the interior design industry has changed dramatically over the past few years as demand increases for quality designer products at more affordable prices.
To help you update your home and create the designer style you're looking for, Grand Designs Magazine's Style Editor, Poppy Norton, has put together her top tips for making your money go that little bit further.
- Come up with a plan: Which rooms do you most want to improve, and what will have the most impact? Would a sleek new sofa transform your living room, or perhaps a stylish light fitting would add a touch of drama? Don't try to tackle them all in one go! Decide what is priority and focus on that first.
- Designing on a budget: Some items, such as a high-quality sofa, new wardrobes or a dining table, might be a big investment, but you can save money elsewhere by buying affordable accessories from high-street stores.
- Inspiration: If you're struggling to come up with that all-important colour scheme, browsing through magazines is a great way to check out the latest new products and trends. Tear out any pages that appeal, to help build up an idea of how you'd like your room to look.
- Create a focal point: Make the most of your budget by spending it on a few key pieces that will form the focal point of each room. Anything from a comfy armchair or a contemporary fireplace to a striking piece of art could do the trick. Think less is more.
- Recycled buys: Sales, auctions, charity shops and car-boot sales are great sources of cost-effective interior-design finds. You may not come across exactly what youre looking for, but if you're prepared to spend some time browsing the auction catalogues (many of which can be found online) or get up at the crack of dawn to join the bargain hunters at your local car-boot sale, you could unearth a hidden gem.
- Don't forget the garden: A well looked-after garden creates the right impression when guests arrive, and also ensures you've got a fantastic space to relax in.
- Selling your home: If you're about to put your home on the market make sure it stands out from the crowd, concentrate your efforts on the areas that will have the biggest impact. Kitchens and bathrooms are key selling points, so update them with items such as; smart freestanding appliances, a dining table and chairs or a sculptural bin could help transform a kitchen; a mirrored cabinet, contemporary shelving or a matching set of graphic-print towels will update a tired bathroom.
