Adware - Software that secretly gathers personal information and
tracks Internet usage usually for marketing purposes. Adware can be downloaded
inadvertently or included in free software, via email or across instant
messenger applications. Further information is available

Cookies - A file containing text that identifies you to
a particular website but can also be used for marketing purposes and customised
ad responses.
Diallers - (Premium rate diallers) Applications which make a connection to the Internet via a
premium rate number or ftp site to accrue charges without your permission or
knowledge. Further information is available

Firewall - A system or combination of systems that enforces a boundary between two or more networks.
Firewalls can be incorporated in hardware such as routers or, as is more common,
as software such as
Windows XP Firewall,
Norton
Personal Firewall amongst
others.
Hacker - An individual intent on entering an environment
without permission normally by using iterative techniques and devices to intercept
private communications.
Hack Tools - Programs used by a
hacker to gain unauthorized access to
your computer. A common example is a keystroke logger which can be used to
record passwords or confidential information.
IP Spoofing - The interception of an active
Internet session by an attacker in an attempt to impersonate the true
user.

Spyware - Software programs that can secretly monitor system activity, in
order to detect passwords or other confidential information and transmit them to another computer.
These programs can be identified and removed using software such as free
software such as
Ad-Aware.

Trojan - A Trojan Horse is a hidden and/or time detonated program that neither replicates nor copies itself, but causes damage or compromises the security of

Virus - A virus is a program or code that replicates; that is, infects another program, boot sector, partition sector, or document that supports macros, by inserting itself or attaching itself to that medium. Most viruses only replicate, though, many do a large amount of damage as well.

Worm - A program that makes copies of itself by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer.

Windows services
- If your computer has been infected by viruses/worms or malware you will find a
named process running on your computer by clicking on Control, Al & Delete
simultaneously and selecting Task Manager and then the Processes tab.
