| Assistant | A tool which gives you easy access to your message centre, allows you to bookmark your favorite pages within LineOne and on the web, and return to the LineOne homepage from wherever you are on the web (see the LineOne Assistant help page). |
| Attachment | A file or document sent as part of an email message, such as a photograph (see the Email Software help page). |

| Bookmark | A shortcut to the address of a web page - or URL - stored by the browser (see the Browser Software help page) or the Assistant (see the LineOne Assistant help page). |
| Browser | A software program which lets your computer find, display and download documents from the Web (see the Browser Software help page). |
| Button | An area which you can click on, generally rectangular in shape. |
| Box | An area of a window which you can click on and/or type into. |

| Cache | A store of web page graphics and/or text files created by the browser on your computer's hard disk to speed up downloading from the web (see the LineOne Connection Speeds help page). |
| Case Sensitive | When a computer treats a word differently when the letters are written in lower case and upper case (i.e. case, Case and CASE). Your LineOne password is case sensitive and you must always enter it in the same case (see the Connecting to LineOne help page). |
| CGI Script | Common Gateway Interface script: method for transferring information between a web page and a server. |
| Click | To depress once, and release, the button on the left-hand side of the mouse. |
| Cookie | A small file sent to your browser from a website or server which records your preferences for a website. You should choose to accept cookies when using LineOne (see the Browser Troublesooting Tips help page). |
| COM Port | Communication Port: the place where the modem connects to your computer (see the LineOne Connection Speeds help page). |
| Cursor | The small moveable icon on the screen which indicates your current control position. The cursor changes appearance depending upon what your computer is doing - for example, it may look like an arrow when the computer is waiting and an hourglass when it is busy. You can change the position of the cursor by moving the mouse. |

| Desktop | The area on your monitor behind any windows which displays your icons. |
| Dial-up | A connection to the Internet via a telephone line. |
| Double-click | To quickly depress and release the left mouse button twice. |
| Download | To copy documents and/or files from the web onto you computer. |
| Drag-and-drop | To click on an icon without releasing the mouse button, move the icon across or between the desktop and/or open windows, and then release the mouse button. Many software programs allow you to use this method for moving files around your computer. |

| Home page | Opening, or first, page of a web site (see the Inside Lineone help page). |

| Icon | A small picture on the desktop or in a window (which you generally double-click on to open). |
| Internet | A global network of computers which provides the technology for the web, email and newsgroups. |
| ISDN | Integrated Services Digital Network: an international standard for transferring digital data over telephone lines at 64 or 128 kbps without using a modem (see the LineOne Connection Speeds help page). |

| Link | A text or graphic element which you can click on to go to another web page. |

| Right-click | To depress once, and release, the button on the right-hand side of the mouse. |
| RocketTalk | A method of sending voice messages to other Internet users. |

| Search Engine | A specialist website which allows you to look for information on the web. |
| Section | An Area of LineOne: LineOne content is organised into different sections - or zones - for easy access. |
| Server | computer which contains documents displayed on the web. |

| Text-box | A box into which text can be typed. |
| Thread | A discussion topic in a newsgroup or forum (see the Forums and Newsgroups help page). |
| Tick | To click on a box so that it displays a tick (in Windows 95) or cross indicating that it is selected. |
| Toolbar | An area containing a number of buttons or links - generally at the top of the page, or on the right-hand side (see the Inside LineOne help page). |

| URL | Uniform Resource Locator: address on the web describing the location of a web page or a website. For example, LineOne's URL is "www.lineone.net". |

| Webpage | An individual document on the web, usually composed of a combination of text and graphics. |
| Website | A collection of documents on the web, generally located on the same server. |
