If you cannot get your email using a mail client follow these basic checks:
Are your mail settings correct?
Click on your mail client to view the correct configuration:
Check carefully that you are connecting through Tiscali, especially if you have software from other ISPs installed on your PC.
Are your password and username correct?
Have you changed them at all? Or are you perhaps entering them with the CAPS LOCK key of
computer on? You can check that you are using the right password and username by connecting to the web and using a little known command called Telnet. To use this, do the following;
- Click the Start button
- then RUN
- type in cmd on Windows NT/2000/XP or Command Windows 95/98/ME
- This opens a new window, with white text on a black screen.
- Type in the following exactly as it appears. You will not see what you are entering so take it slowly, and if you make a mistake, start again. telnet pop.tiscali.co.uk 110 or telnet pop3.lineone.net 110 and hit the enter key
- you will then be connected to the email server.
- Type in USER yourname@tiscali.co.uk and hit the enter key
- You will then get a message +OK Please enter you pass, with the PASS command
- type in PASS yourpassword and click the Enter key
- If it is correct, you will get an OK Well done message.
- If you can do this, but you cannot connect using your mail client, you need to recheck your settings again
Are you connecting to the Internet through Tiscali?
If not, even if your mail settings are correct, you will not be able to send emails using Outlook Express, although you will be able to receive them. This is because the SMTP server which appears in your settings must be the same one as the ISP you are connecting through.
Do you have Tiscali webmail open at the same time?
If so close it and try again as you can only have one mail session at a time,
hence you cannot download through a mail a client if you have webmail open too.
Are you running an anti-virus program?
Older versions of Norton AntiVirus are known to interfere with the receiving of emails. Typically, when you check your settings, you will find that the pop3 server has been changed to read either pop3.norton.antivirus or 127.0.0.1. PC-cillin from Trend Micro can also do this, changing your POP setting to 'local host' Norton Anti-virus 2002 can prevent you receiving mail without leaving an obvious trace. So if you have any anti-virus package on your PC, and are having difficulty with Outlook Express, open your anti-virus program and
disable automatic scanning of email.
Is CLI (Caller Line identification) enabled?
If you are connecting through a BT line, you need to have 1470, in front of the number you connect to the Internet from in order to connect properly.
Click here for our at-a-glance guide to all settings. If you are connecting through another phone company this number may be different, so you need to check.
Are you connecting from a different number?
If CLI is enabled using 1470 as a prefix, and you have an Anytime, Daytime, OffPeak or 50/100 package, are you connecting from the number you specified when you signed up for your package? If you have moved home, or changed your telco, you need to let us know or you will not be able to connect. Call the
0906 300 6633 helpline (calls charged at 50p per minute). If you need to have two numbers to connect from, the best plan is to open a new Pay As You Go account for the second number.
Still no joy?
