Check your Broadband cabling setup

Check your cabling setup

Your Broadband pack contains the following two cables:
USB Cable
This connects the modem to your computer to supply the modem with power.
Supplied USB cable
RJ11 Cable
This cable connects the modem to your telephone line via a Broadband filter so that your computer can utilise the Broadband connection.
Supplied RJ11 cable

In order to be able to connect successfully make sure that your RJ11 cable is:
  • Connected directly from the modem to your phone line using a Broadband filter. It is not recommended to use a telephone extension cable as it is not designed to handle digital signals. If your computer is too far away from your phone socket you will need to purchase a RJ11 cable which is designed to transmit high quality digital Broadband signals. Longer RJ11 cables are available at most PC stores or can be purchased online here.
  • Not being circumvented using a telephone splitter. If you use a telephone splitter to attach extra devices to the same socket as your Broadband modem make sure that the splitter is connected into the Broadband filter rather than into the socket without going through a filter.
  • All devices which normally connect into the phone socket must be connected to a Broadband filter as well. For a comprehensive list of such devices click here.

Correct cabling result

If your modem and cabling has been set up correctly you will see two solid green lights which indicate

Your ADSL light represents your modem receiving an ADSL (Broadband) signal. If this is solid green it indicates your RJ11 cabling is correct and that the signal is being received clearly. If this is not solid green click here.
Your PWR (Power) light indicates that your modem is receiving power from your computer. If this is solid green it indicates your USB cabling is correct and that sufficient power is being supplied to the modem. If this is not solid green click here.

NOTE: Do not connect the modem to the computer prior to completing the Installation process on the Tiscali Broadband CD as this can cause software problems.

General cabling checks

  • Check the connections to and from the telephone with the problem. Check to make sure that your Broadband filter connects securely to the  wall socket and that any additional devices (phone, fax etc.) are connected securely to the filter.
  • Check that you are receiving a clear analogue dial tone on a telephone handset. If the line sounds noisy with interference double check it and all other telephony appliances are connected to a filter. In order to identify a weak link within your property remove all items connected to a phone socket and then connect them individually via filters and check the quality of the line in order to eliminate the possibility of a faulty flter.
  • To make sure that there is no problem with your telephone line, disconnect your Broadband modem or shut down your computer so that the a bad line can be identified. If there is no dial-tone on any phone or the line is still not clear there may be a problem with your telephony service which can be investigated with BT's by calling their residential repair service on 151.
