Ron has a point - but we should bear in mind that we in the West have a responsibility as it is our population growth and industrial development which has accelerated the problem. China and India (and to some extent Brazil et al) may be the main contributors now - but we started it. We should focus on doing what we can and investing in R&D to help them learn from our mistakes.

Ron says:
Although I agree with all of the above, they and all the other ideas being put forward are little more than short to medium term palliatives. The real issue that no-one wants to discuss or deal with is the exponential growth of the global population. If we all really care about the environment, the planet, resources and the future for our descendents then this needs to be resolved now. There are small scale examples of uncontrolled population growth effectively destroying themselves or/and /way of life from the Mayans to nearer at home - geographically and timewise. This information is available to anyone yet no government anywhere wants to handle this unavoidable "hot-potato".

It disgusts me as a runner, cyclist and pedestrian that red Ken is still incentivising Diesels. They stink and they cause far more pollution than the petrol alternative for only a small benefit in CO2 emissions. Half the cars in the 'Green Cars' Tiscali report that are exempt from the congestion charge are diesels. If everyone switches to diesel, to save CO2 or money, then London will have a massive pollution problem and many more people will suffer ill health (particularly lung cancer and asthma). I'd rather breathe clean air than provide a small reduction in CO2 emissions. Please stop incentivising the dirty fuel.

The problem Russ, is that for every person making an effort, there is another buying a 4x4 in addition to their Porsche and 'vintage' gas guzzler . . . oh, and the long-haul holidays . . . . As though their entitlement was greater than anyone elses. It is rude not to make an effort to be greener.

Hi Amber, the only problem is, not many people can actually be bothered to join in with this sort of thing. It's a shame that more people aren't concerned about reducing their carbon footprint.

AMBER says:
Check out earthhour.org At 8pm on 29th March 2008 they are asking that you turn your lights off for one hour. Not a long time and you probably thought not much difference but last year in Sydney they reduced their CO2 emissions by 10 % from this one event alone. This event is hosted by the WWF follow the link above to register your support.

Sharon says: I'm all for recycling, but it annoys me when I put certain items out for collection and they're not taken away. EG; orange juice boxes - I even chop of the plastic bit, but for some reason they still won't take them and I really don't know why. Better guidelines should be provided as untaken items put people off recycling.
