Who you gonna call?
A quarter of a century since Bill Murray and his team of cross-beaming fools wasted the Marshmallow Man and we finally have a decent game from the franchise. A quarter of a century - that should make anyone who fell in love with the slimers and bad big dude, Gozer, feel very old.
Thankfully this NYC based outing, set in plot terms two years after the second film, will restore any cult following in you. And you should know that Murray, Ackroyd et al have lent a hand to the voiceovers (with script help from Ackroyd and co-star Harold Ramis). So, the package in effect is damn close to the original feel and appeal of the original film.
You're on board as a rookie to the Ghostbuters outfit, an 'experimental equipment tester' and all the vague and decidedly unnerving connotations that has, particularly when it comes to plasma beams. You're immediately thrown into the gooey thick of things, trapping and hunting entities under the guise of Gozer's evil plan for the Big Apple and then the world.
Gameplay is smooth, though the AI needs a kick up the backside at times, and the third person viewpoint (Gears of War style) means plenty of ducking and diving and most importantly, NO CROSSING OF STREAMS! Though on your first play, you know you will try just to see what happens.
Fast and fluid gameplay in single player mode and over on multiplayer, there's a selection of good ideas including the groan-worthy Slime Dunk mode. Playing against your mates to 'dunk' ghosts into traps or Survival, where teamwork to defeat waves of entities is the key to well, survival.
New weapons form the Slime Thrower to the Meson Collider should keep you happy and once you've got round to the fact that you spend quite a lot of time playing ER doctor to fallen Ghostbusters, this is a beam blast of a title.
