Dragon-baiting is back with a vengeance
Fans of fire-breathers can breath their own sigh of relief. True to its roots, the latest Spyro title brings the purple, winged hero back to its cutely addictive basics. Along with Sparx, this second part of the trilogy continues the Spryo story; defeating Cynder reveals the forces behind Spryo's quest to be larger and more expansive than he thought. It also doesn't help that he's fallen head over heels for the real Cynder behind the mask. Chasing and defeating enemies of the Dark master make for the story of the game. Armed with new fire powers and access to base elements like electricity and ice mean that his arsenal is greatly improved this time round. With upgradeable attacks and a special fury move, you'll still need to use your wits to dispatch the waves of the bad guys that at times seem endless. While there's still a strong platformer element to the gameplay, it's the combat that's been ramped up. The balance between all-out fire attacks and timing your jumps and flights is a good one - especially when you enter slow mo Dragon Time! The one overriding problem is that The Eternal Night is incredibly difficult in parts. It seems to straddle the adult and kid gamer appeal, as though the developers weren't quite sure who to pitch this to. They've chased the big names of the likes of Gary Oldman and Elijah Woods for voice-overs but it's a shame that such zeal wasn't applied to getting the game's difficulty evened out. If you like your rudimentary puzzles, plenty of tail-whipping combat then the cute and colourful gameplay will appeal. Perhaps, this is for die-hard fans only though.
