Tomb Raider Anniversary - (PC (reviewed))
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Format: PC (reviewed)
Genre: Action
Lara is back and looking better than ever.
In 1996, the original Tomb Raider was launched. The 3D game design, controls and graphics were truly ground breaking for their time. Furthermore, gamers were also presented with a unique, female human playable character with whom they could become emotionally attached, Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider sold over seven million copies and is still heralded as an absolute classic and one of the best action adventure games ever. Tomb Raider defined the PlayStation and changed the way that people played games.
In tribute to this and to celebrate and commemorate the continuing development of the Tomb Raider franchise and its central character, Crystal Dynamics have developed a new Tomb Raider adventure for Lara. Inspired by the original Tomb Raider video game; Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary faithfully preserves the elements which made the original Tomb Raider game such a classic.
What we're served with is a comprehensive menu of all the ingredients that made this franchise such a hit in the first place and none of the dodgy bits that turned half the audience off (we're looking at you Tomb Raider Chronicles).
So say a warm hello to complex puzzles that offer variety rather than brain numbing repetition or inane box shifting / lever pulling. Graphics that finally do justice to the beautiful environments that one of the most gorgeous characters in videogame history ever flipped, climbed and twirled through (and she does it all again). More rewards than you can shake a shooter at, accurate gun play and levels that seem to just get bigger and bigger. Fitting that an anniversary edition has also created a benchmark. Long live Lara - we think she'll be around for years to come yet.
