Action stations in this split personality shooter
Imagine living in two worlds at the same time. We have a hard enough job staying organised in one reality - but the forthcoming 'steampunk' action adventure from Australian developer FuzzyEyes has gamers dipping their toes in two worlds simultaneously. Players take on the role of Lex, a hero that exists in two worlds at the same time, and who must traverse through these worlds to keep them both from being destroyed. Seen the Keanu Reeves movie Constantine? The premise of this game is very similar. The two worlds are split between light and dark (hence the title). While in the Light World Lex appears in human form complete with a dead cool sword and gun combo weapon, switch to the dark world and Lex becomes something akin to an acrobatic shadow - scaling walls and stealthily sneaking around like a malevolent ninja. Fighting is where the fun is. Lex can unleash combo attacks using his blade or gradually build up a ranged power metre on his firearm to keep enemies at bay. In typical run and gun shooter format. defeated foes will yield items (in this case a gassy substance) that can then be used to enter a special Max Payne style slow motion mode or even to power up some of the environmental machines that Lex will encounter on his adventure. The environment or should that be environment(s) play a central role to the action and Lex must solve numerous puzzles that require activities in both realms in order to progress. Visually - well what can we say, we're suckers for a good looking game. The title is based on the Unreal engine which guarantees maximum detail combined with a super slick frame rate. The third person action where the deeds in one world impact the events of another are similar in style to the Soul Reaver games, which to our mind at least, is no bad thing. A release is scheduled for May 2009 - although as we've already seen this game slip more than a banana skin on an ice rink, we wouldn't go holding our collective breath just yet.
