No plans to introduce Xbox 360 Blu-Ray drive claims MS executive plus Mass Effect 2 Xbox 360 screens
The Internet has been alive with rumours that Microsoft may be planning to add a Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox 360, in light of both the crushing defeat of its preferred format HD DVD and some misquoted comments by the company's Chief Executive, Steve Ballmer.
The Microsoft CEO was recently quoted in an interview with tech website Gizmondo as saying "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there - you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
This startling comment was widely considered to be an admission by Microsoft that it might go head to head with Sony in a Blu-Ray war, but alas this doesn't appear to be the case.
Speaking on his official blog, Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has totally denied any such strategy is on the cards.
"During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360," he explained. "I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC.
"As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition."
So sadly, there's no chance of playing any Blu-Ray discs on an Xbox 360 any time soon - we'll just have to stream our HD quality content instead, yay!
From Blu-Ray to Mass Effect. We've got some fresh screens of the sequel to one of the most engaging role playing shooters in recent years. With its larger-than-life hero Commander Shepard, intense shooter action, nuanced characters and a rich storyline, the sequel to the original award-winning title is one of the most anticipated titles of 2010. A release is scheduled for Jan 29 on Xbox 360 and PC.
