In-game items stockpiled by rogue player plus 3D PS3 games in the pipeline and Blur screens
EVE Online, the popular PC online RPG has been rocked by further player-generated scandal as it emerges that one of the members of the player-elected Council of Stellar Management has resigned after being found guilty of insider trading - on a monumental scale.
The online space adventure and trading game is still recovering from an in-game fraud that ran into the unimaginable sum of 200bn Kredits (in-game credits) when the Chief Exec of one of the largest EVE banks stole the cash and then sold it for over 3,000 (GBP) money in the real world.
This time a CSM member was trading on the game's commodities market, based on advance notice he received of a design change in the game - even though CSM members - representatives of the players - (a similar a Union leader in the real world) are forbidden from acting on any inside information for personal benefit.
Adam Ridgway known in-game as Larkonis Trassler had managed to stockpile over 2bn worth of items before his scam was uncovered. "Before attending [the CSM summit] the thought of using any information gained to aid my position in game never crossed my mind. However, we are all human and when presented with this information the urge to act on it was too great," Ridgway confessed in a statement. He has since been replaced on the Council by another player.
Meanwhile it looks like true 3D gaming may be coming one step closer as Sony once again hints at 3D game compatibility with the PS3. The company has let gamers play titles such as Wipeout HD in full 3D at the recent IFA consumer electronics event in Berlin. The games on show were standard PS3 titles processed through a new 3D Bravia TV that displays accurate 3D technology. Sony has since confirmed that the new TV would be available across Europe next year and that future PS3 models would even have the 3D processing capability built into them. The ability to enjoy 3D gaming on any Hi-Definition TV no longer seems to be a distant ambition - we can but hope.
From 3D to 2D. We've got some brand new screens of Blur - a swish looking racer forthcoming from Activision. There's over 50 cars, brain bending tracks and the ability to blast other cars out of the way with huge bursts of energy, boost speed with Nitros, drop mines and even generate defensive shields to fend off other racers. A release is scheduled for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in the autumn.
