Brave words from Sony executive plus Burnout Paradise expansion available to download from Thursday and God of War III PS3 screens
Never let it be said that the executives at Sony aren't a brave bunch. In light of losing substantial ground to both Microsoft and Nintendo in the current console war, the veteran PlayStation manufacturer now suggests that existing Xbox 360 and Wii gamers will upgrade to the PS3 in order to keep up to date with technological advancements.
Andrew House, the president of SCE Europe, stated to Edge Magazine: "If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64, we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them."
He continued: "I think we're going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it's a Blu-ray player as well and that there's a greater wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace."
A case of eternal optimism or business savvy-predictions? The jury is well and truly out on that one; but we can't help but think that a price reduction and more PS3-exlcusive games couldn't do any harm in tempting the millions of gamers that both Nintendo and Microsoft proudly call their own.
Meanwhile, Criterion Games has today announced that the Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island expansion pack will be available to download on June 11 for (GBP)9.99 on the PlayStation Network and 1000 MS Points on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island is a brand new playground that enhances and expands the world of the award-winning driving game, Burnout Paradise. Highlights include fun challenges and events for groups of friends to play online, a bran new world to discover, the 'biggest and wildest' jumps yet, plus a set of nine new vehicles to experience it all in.
The game also features an Island specific driver's license for single player progression, challenging players to explore the World, find secret areas and experience a host of new events and challenges. And all this for the cost of a cinema ticket - a bargain.
Finally, we round off this bumper news briefing with some brand new screens of one of the biggest titles to emerge from E3. God of War III is the final instalment of the multi-million unit-selling trilogy famed for larger than life brutal combat, epic exploration and brain straining puzzles. Previously a PS2 title, this will be the games first outing on the PS3 - and we expect visually magnificent things! A release is scheduled for March 2010.
