GTA IV breaks Guinness World Record

GTA IV breaks Guinness World Record
GTA IV breaks Guinness World Record

Tuesday 13th May 2008 - 17:00

Phenomenon confirmed: GTA IV is most profitable game of all-time, weekly chart round up plus Family Trainer Wii screens

The Grand Theft Auto series just can't keep out of the headlines, As newly-released sales figures show, Grand Theft Auto IV has crushed the competition by selling 3.6 million units and earning a whopping $310 million in its first day of release, earning Guinness World Records for the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours.

These records establish GTA IV as the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, far surpassing other video game, film and book releases - which includes the likes of Harry Potter! According to Guinness World Records, this is how the game stacks up against the competition: Fastest-selling video game in 24 hours was Halo 3 at $170 million, fastest-selling theatrical movie in 24 hours was Spider-Man 3 at $60 million and fastest-selling book in 24 hours: Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows at $220 million. Based on those figures GTA IV took more than Halo 3 and the Spider-Man 3 movie, combined! We wonder if Rockstar (the development team behind the franchise) will be installing gold plated Jacuzzis in luxury new offices anytime soon.

The charts almost seem something of a formality this week. There's no prizes for guessing which game has claimed the top spot. Grand Theft Auto IV has now sold more than one million copies in the UK alone, outselling its nearest rival Wii Fit by a staggering 4-1. Wii Play continues to sit in third spot with Mario and Sonic at The Olympic Games coming in fourth.

From the mean streets of Liberty City to the active family orientated world of Family Trainer, a new activity title coming on Wii. If you ever fancied river rafting, mine karting, log jumping, rope skipping and half a dozen other off the wall challenges you've come to the right place. Unlike other games for the Wii which only focus on the arms, Family Trainer gets the feet involved too for total body gameplay as the title comes with its own Family Trainer mat controller which can be combined with the Wii Remote. It sounds intriguing - and energetic. A release is scheduled for September.
