Alliances:
Alliances in netro are a very key feature. Many players play closely with other players.
From the very early stages in a town you may well have offers, or give offers, to join an alliance. Often these offers are given in a sense of "We wont bomb each other" or "lets work together to bomb someone out of here". More rarely you will chat to someone, or get to know someone well enough that you may consider sharing companies with that person. Just a word of warning on this. The Games Team's current status on this (April 2004), is that if you are sharing a company with another person then there is nothing they can do if the password gets changed and you can no longer access your company. Therefore, I advise a high level of caution before giving anyone your u/p. Remember that they may be in it for their own gain only.
Having said all this this, there is no arguing with the fact that being in an alliance can aid you greatly. My own belief is that who you are friends with in the game really decides how far you get to a degree. As always, there are exceptions to this rule, but the more people you are friendly with - the less people are likely to bomb you! Being in an alliance is building on this friendship, and I suggest that at first you keep your companies to yourself, but work with the other users to build up trust, before you start sharing companies. The more people that have access to a particular place, or to particular companies, the more likely you are to do well there, or with those companies. You will be able to bomb faster, put out fires faster, have better day and night cover, and generally be in a damn site better position than a player on their own.
Depending at what stage you're at will affect what you will be able to do with your alliance. There is no reason not to have high goals, but bear in mind that if you are overly confident, and rather cocky, then you're likely to gain some unwanted attention from the big players in the game. If you're only small then master the small things first. Try and take a town or two with your alliance. Maybe try and work together to get a bit of city land. Maybe try and take a decent amount of city land. If you're feeling very brave, and have set it up well then there is no reason why you shoudln't try taking a whole city, or some cap land.
You will be able to go a long way in an alliance, but I would advise a couple of little suggestions that you bear in mind. I have been in more alliances than I can keep track of, but most recently I was in TopCatz, The Administration, and I had an invitation to join The Family. However, of all the alliances I've been in, the best ones followed these simple guides:
1). DO NOT invite someone to join just because you need an extra pair of hands. ONLY invite someone to join if you think they can be trusted, and you think they will bring more to the alliance than they will cost it.
2). Don't try and force members to give their u/p's (usernames/passes) to other members of the alliance if they do not want to.
3). Don't expect for everyone in the alliance to be best buddies all the time.
4). Use individual strengths.
