Core's next release will be the long awaited four-way action-puzzler packing big guns and even bigger buildings.
Tomb Raider isn't the only way forward for Core Design. The Derby-based developer currently has a slew of projects in the works aside from the top-heavy delights of Lara, including a new version of helicopter shooter Thunderhawk, an Xbox outing in the form of Race Nation, and the long-delayed team adventure Project Eden. The wait for the latter is nearly over.
Set in a world where space at ground level has run out, Eden promotes a dark future with huge buildings, monsters in the metal depths of gargantuan cities and evil corporations pulling the strings of society. Not massively unlikely the 21st Century West, then. A team of four soldiers works its way down to the truth in the game, employing puzzle-solving skills and some seriously tasty weaponry.
Our friends at CVG grabbed five minutes with the team. Various member of the Core crew answers these questions.
CVG: You've been in development for some time now. What have you been mainly working on since we last spoke to you in January?
Eden team: We've been puling the game together, getting everything to work in the correct order and in the correct place. We have also been adding extra special effects to add more depth and a few surprises!
CVG: Are you prepared to start talking about the storyline for the game yet? How heavily does Eden rely on plot?
Eden team: Sorry, we don't want to disclose the plot - the story is only to be found out by playing the game. It is worth it though!
CVG: What differences can we expect between the PlayStation 2 and PC versions? Which do you prefer?
Eden team: Both feature multi player modes. The PS2 will feature one-to four-player split-screen while the PC has networking. As for which we prefer, that is a nasty question! The only real difference between them is the default controllers - the PS2 uses pads and the PC uses keyboard and mouse. Both has it's own virtue...
CVG: How much gameplay can we actually expect from Eden? Do you think gamers after this sort of gameplay want a 60-hour marathon or a 10-hour casual experience?
Eden team: It should take a competent player at least 10 to 15 hours to play Eden. We're not out to compete with he likes of Final Fantasy or Baldur%u2019s Gate - they're good games but a lot of people never managed to finish them. We really want people to finish Eden and find out what's really going on with the plot - as well as play through all the levels we've taken so long to create.
CVG: Are there plans to extend the franchise to other formats, for sequels or anything of that nature? What about add-ons for the PC version?
Eden team: I think we'll have to see how successful this one is before committing to a sequel. As for add-ons, that's definitely a possibility.
CVG: A question of control. How have you adapted the PlayStation 2 version so the interface is appropriate for the machine? Would you describe Eden as a PC or a console game?
Eden team: It's a real mix of both PC and console. Some people think it's works best on console, others on PC - It works well on both systems.
CVG: What are the main attractions of the game for the player? What does it bring to market that can't be found anywhere else?
Eden team: Eden is one of those products that pushes the boarders of the genre. It gets away from the first- and third-person frag fest and gives the player a chance to use their mind. To play Eden you don't have to be a great shot, but you'll certainly have to be able to solve problems, often by thinking about the whole team.
CVG: The game has slipped many times over the past year. Can you explain why? Do you finally have a solid release date for both versions?
Eden team: The release date is September for both formats. The game has slipped to extra development time being required to implement all the features we wanted to include - also for extra time in test.
CVG: Finally, are you glad to be approaching the end of the development period? What makes you most proud about the title?
Eden team: Definitely glad that the end is in sight. What are we most proud of? Probably the fact that we've achieved what we set out to do without having to compromise... too much!
