Games of 2007 - Preview

Will Halo 3 stand out as 2007 gamers' main event?

Games of 2007 - Preview

The tinsel may still be hanging from the Christmas tree but we here at Tiscali Games are a forward-looking bunch; so take a walk with us into the future as we run through some of the most eagerly anticipated games of 2007.

Xbox 360

The third and final instalment in the Halo franchise promises to be the best yet. Halo 3, due for release in March 2007 is all set to be the 'killer' game for the Xbox 360. Actual details are thinner on the ground than frost in July but what we do know is that Master Chief, the hero of the two previous exploits, will once again be reaching for the nearest plasma rifle to do away with all manner of Covenant nasties in this intergalactic first person shooter. A public beta test is scheduled for the start of next year where fans can test the multiplayer online offering prior to release. Expect a very long list of names, eager to try out what will be the most anticipated Xbox 360 game ever.

PS3

With Sony's next-gen machine still tantalisingly out of reach for European gamers, it's tricky to predict what will be causing PS3 thumb blisters. But some titles are clearly a sure-fire winner. Grand Theft Auto IV has been announced by Rockstar games so we know there's going to be a heavy slice of next-gen gangster drive-by gang banging in October 2007.

Heavenly Sword, a spectacular looking beat-em' up incorporating swash buckling sword play and bone-crunching free form melee combat looks like a sure fire success when it's released next year. Resistance: Fall of Man a first person shooter boasting gorgeous visuals, exotic weaponry and online support for up to 40 players has been scoring rave reviews in the US, with some likening it to the seminal PC classic that is Half-Life.

Wii

The console has just been launched a couple of weeks before the end of 2006 so we're going to cheat a little and cover perhaps some of the big games that launched during the Xmas season. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is proving to be one of the most popular and enduring games for Nintendo's revolutionary console. Horseback combat, the ability to morph into a wolf and the whole revelation of playing a Zelda game using the new motion sensor technology (such as paddling a canoe or using a bow and arrow) is enough to keep this game top of the Wii charts. Super Smash Bros. Brawl looks set to be a big title when it receives a retail release in mid 2007. The chance to play as a huge number of favourite characters such as Solid Snake, Mario, Wario and Link (amongst an enormous cast) and battle it out over massive interactive levels will be a temptation that few could resist.

PC

With over 8 million subscribers worldwide the sheer numbers alone suggest the expansion pack to the phenomenally popular World of Warcraft MMORPG should be the biggest seller of the year. The Burning Crusade includes two new playable races (the Blood Elves and the Draenei), flying mounts, new talents and abilities for all character classes, the new jewelcrafting profession, new magical weapons and armour, and many enhancements to player-vs.-player action. Which in a nutshell explains why most of us will be staying indoors for the first half of 2007.

Crysis, a First Person Shooter from Crytek the team behind gorgeous jungle shooter Far Cry is sure to be the most hotly anticipated PC run and gun game. But if you want to exercise your brain along with your trigger finger then the long awaited addition to the Real Time Strategy genre is Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars - and it shouldn't fail to disappoint.

Handhelds

The Nintendo DS is still leading the way in the battle for your pocket and judging from the strong software line-up, the dominance is set to continue. Football fans will rejoice in the news that the king of footy titles, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 will make its DS debut early in the year. But fans after that unique Nintendo gameplay experience will be counting the days until the release of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, a title that should make most of the stylus control options and the all-important second screen.
