shame on Manchester United and Liverpool football clubs for not joining in with the other 18 premier league clubes who are having POPPIES embroidered on their shirts this weekend. ..... All embroidered first-team shirts will be donated to the British Legion Poppy Appeal

The hysteria of poppy wearing or not in many a public forum does no credit to those people / organisations that do stirling work for charities all year round - not just the week or two leading to remembrance day. Quite a few teams have no doubt been bullied into this 'public display' with some dailymail campaign, and anybody who uses the dailymail as an upholder of justice and fairness - needs to perhaps evaluate their own stand in what is important about remembrance day.
Mind you, United have often suffered from a poor PR department, perhaps they should be a little more vociferous on this occassion. Next we'll have the PC brigade insisting clubs should have pink ribbons for this charity, or wristbands for that. Last edited by MikeR; 6th November 2009 at 07:28 PM. |

There's a pic close up of Arsenals on that link but i doubt you would see it from far away like from tv camera's.
If thats Liverpools and Man Utd excuse, it's pretty lame really. |

You know nothing of my commitment to the British legion and the War dead - yet because i (and others) question the stance of such a campaign - you throw into question and insult me and my attitude to Remembrance day and then you go further and bring into play my response to all charities. |

Not to insult you Mike at all its upto you if you feel guilty over your comments thou. Mind whole point was that the premier league clubs were trying to do there bit and you belittled that.Perhaps we should remember the dead and do what we can to help them and there family's because of course this is only one kind gesture by the clubs but it should bring in some good money for them

I've have to agree with MikeR on this matter. First of all I am a poppy wearer myself (Before anyone jumps on me like they have Mike) but I came across this comment while reading the Guardian article Mike posted
"The people who fought in the trenches did so, in part, to protect the freedoms of future generations. Including, presumably, the freedom not to wear a poppy." Yes I know selling the shirts is a good idea, however I'm not so sure about how much having a poppy on the front will increase their value if at all. I'm not sure about the other clubs but I know Man Utd support various armed forces charities throughout the year. I'm also sure all the clubs not wearing poppies will be doing their bit by selling poppies around the ground to make money for the British Legion. There are various reasons why people do not wear poppies but I feel that comment I quoted above sums everything up nicely. |
