Sadly I think the comments attached to the article make it plain, Flo, that the debate re the "great british public" is probably a lost cause.

I listened to a report on R4 where they interviewed people in the street asking them why we had gone into Afghanistan.....not one of them had a clue...

Shocking....and what's really shocking is that these people are about to take us into a period of government by the tories.....I have no doubt they don't have a clue what the tory policies are either but are simply taken in by the campaign of petty personal hatred of Brown....

I wouldn't mind so much the tories being voted in if it was done by an electorate that had a clue.

Hi Steve.

I am afraid the broader and long term issues get lost a bit when poeple see things like of recent days.

Mind you a lot only see a problem with the Taliban and poppy fields.

At least the commentary you refered to was not jsut a anti terrist rant tagged onto 9/11.

I have always thought Paddy Ashdown talked a lot of sense.....in fact in general a lot of lib dems do....I just don't agree with their policies.
