Exclamation Deep Heat....

Mr Zanzi has a bad neck/shoulder and complained of it when we got into bed last night. I went to the medicine bag and found a tube of DEEP HEAT Mentholatum rub (remember the deep voice?!). I tried and couldn't squeeze the tube so I gave it to Mr Zanzi - he tried and almost strained his arm trying to get the damn stuff out. Then we looked at the tube - sell by date 1989! How we laughed! In the light of day we could see that it had gone rusty and solidified but it still had the same nostalgic smell. I think it belonged to my mother and she died in 1989 - I somehow feel loathe to throw it away! Ridiculous!
Cheers

Ah! Zanzi... I can almost feel your feelings now. Do you know what reminded me now "Vicks"... I am sure you heard this, it was our best medicine in my childhood days at home. But I can't see it anymore... I remember its smell now. Ah, our brains... with full of memories...

I wish you both to have a nice day,
with my love,
nia

Those words "Deep Heat" and "Mentholatum" bringing back memories of the past, Zanzi! I can almost "conjure up" the smell of Mentholatum, which helped to cure childhood coughs and colds. Isn't it odd what we refuse to throw away because it links us to the past and happy memories. Anyone opening my memory box, with souvenirs of my life would never understand my need to keep my "treasures", collected over the years.

Deep Heat has fond memories for me. My O/H had rubbed it into my shoulders and then went to the toilet! Ouch.

When I say fond it is beause we still laugh about it all these years later.

When I moved, a couple of years ago, I found an unopened tin of black peppercorn, it was priced in old money. I thought this may be worth a few bob. I still have the unopened tin but somebody has peeled off the price ticket!

Does it remove grease stains or something. I'm not good on stains - I'm sure Leevan (obviously ) and althea will know!
Cheers

I think that brown paper and a hot iron are used to remove grease stains from fabric. I pray that they are not an old remedy used to cure colds etc.

Its an old grandmothers remedy for muscular aches and pains.
I recall seing it done many times when I was a nipper.
The brown paper was placed over the effected area and ..... it was ironed with a hot iron.
Just heat treatment really before the days of creams and ointmnets.

Brown paper and a hot iron put a sharp crease in trousers. Place trouser leg on ironing board, make a fold where the crease is required. Place a single sheet of brown paper on top. Sprinkle with water and iron. The trousers will not scorch and you should have a sharp crease. To get an extra sharp crease - run a bar of soap down the crease from the inside of the trouser leg and iron again. Are there no National Servicemen out there?

Yep, I remember it well. A quick alternative was to put them under the mattress overnight.

Brown paper and a hot iron will remove grease or wax from a fabric.
I bet it eased a sore joint too.I remember bread poultices and soap and sugar poultices, but as Leevan says they were just ways to keep heat on an area.

Yes,my OH was in Germany and Malaya during his service.
He has told me how to put a sharp crease in trousers with soap and says he's very good at it.I have to take his word for it as he never goes anywhere near the iron.
(We have a trouser press anyway,as I'm useless at pressing trousers.)
