Default Repairing a hole in a plasterboard wall.

The internal walls in the upstairs of my house appear to comprise of a layer of plasterboard on each side, seperated by carboard wadding (if thats the right word).

Anyway, me being the complete idiot that I am, cut out a hole for a TV socket, then decided I wasn't happy with where I'd decided to put it, so now have a 3" square hole in my bedroom wall that needs filling.

Havign looked at some DIY pages around the web, it appears the best course of action is to cut out a scrap bit of plasterboard that's about an inch or so longer than the hole, but narrower, which I can affix behind it. Then glue another piece about the same size as the hole on to that to plug the gap, then plaster over with some ready mixed stuff.

Does that sound like they way to go about things? Does anyone have any other suggestions, or recommendations as to what the best sort of filler/plaster to use would be?

TIA

I've done it before using the system you found from the web....

You want a smooth plaster or a fine filler.

If I was to repair it Id' just stick a blanking plate over the hole.
they're the same size as a light switch or arial socket & they don't look that daft.

If you haven't any plasterboard you could fill it the traditional way - with wattle and daub:-

Weave some small sticks into the hole to provide a firm backing. Then half fill your bath with a mixture of clay, straw, and horse manure. Take your shoes and socks off and walk about in the mixture till it is nice and smooth and oozes in a rather pleasant way between your toes. Then splat a few handfuls onto the sticks in the hole and smooth it over with your hands. Leave it a few months to dry and for the smell to die down, then paint over it with lime-wash. Hey presto! good as new. (If you don't know how to make lime-wash, PM me.)

LOL

Simply jobs like you describe, I would use expanding foam with plasterboard or even a piece of ply, either one can be cut to as near possible to the exact size off the hole.

Then:

1) spray the expanding foam into hole, be warned it does exactly what it says on the tin, so go easy with it, (try a tiny bit on some old newspaper to see what mean!) When you think you have sprayed enough foam into the hole in the wall ( allowing for it to expand completely ) gently press in the pre cut plasterboard / ply, push it against the foam setting it back a couple of mm,
this is to allow the plaster to take hold.

2) plaster the hole when the foam is set, but be slight generous to create a very slight convex finish.

3) when the plaster is dried in a few days, use a sandpaper block to gentle rub down and even the plastered hole with the wall.

4) deco as required.

Presto

I still have it, but not sure it would suffice to plug the hole back up, owing to the fact there's a large gap all the way round from where I cut it out. I would really like something that will fit in the hole a little more snugly.
