Ingredients:
- 1 tsp butter, for greasing
- 500g (1lb 2oz) baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 150ml (1/4 pint) apple juice
- 40g (1 1/2oz) sugar
- 6 slices Warburtons Hot Cross Bun Loaf
- 1 egg, beaten
- 150ml (1/4 pint) milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
- Single cream or natural yogurt, to serve
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 190°C/fan oven 170°C/ Gas Mark 5. Grease a 1 litre (1.75 pint) baking dish with the butter or use individual baking dishes.
- Simmer the apples in the apple juice with the sugar for 8-10 minutes, until tender. Transfer to the baking dish or share between the dishes.
- Cut each slice of bun loaf into four triangles. Beat the egg, milk and vanilla together. Dip the bun loaf pieces in the egg mixture to coat both sides, then arrange over the apples. Sprinkle with a little ground nutmeg, if you like.
- Bake the pudding for 15-20 minutes, until the topping is crisp and golden. Serve with single cream or natural yogurt.
- Cook's Tip: Use plums instead of apples, for a change.
