Six Nations terms

The Six Nations Tournament is the oldest rugby tournament in the world. In 1871 England and Scotland played the very first rugby union international game. Nine years later Wales and Ireland joined which created the Home International Champions.

Until 1993 there was no actual trophy or cup.

Up until 1893, England and Scotland dominated the tournament then that year Wales became champions with their new four three-quarter system. That year they won the Triple Crown for the first time ever: beating all three other nations.

Wales went on to go unbeaten at home for 13 years between 1900 and 1913 and won the Six Nations title six times.

Twickenham was opened in 1910 and it brought luck to England as they won the Title that year.

France had joined the Tournament in 1910, making it the first Five Nations but they were forced to leave in 1931 due to on-pitch violence and problems with their administration. They rejoined in 1939 but the outbreak of World War Two meant that the Tournament was played again for another eight years.

In 1959 France won the Title for the first time.

In 1973 history was made when there was a five-way tie with every team having won and lost two games.

Italy joined in 2000 making it the Six Nations.
