1896

Athens
The revival of the ancient Olympics attracted athletes from 14 nations.

1900

Paris
The Games were held as part of the Paris World's Fair and events were spread over five months.

1904

St Louis
Once again the Olympic competitions were lost in the chaos of a World's Fair.

1906

Athens
In an effort to reinvigorate the Olympics, Greece organised the "interim Olympics".

1908

London
The 1908 Olympics, originally awarded to Rome, saw as opening ceremony for the first time.

1912

Stockholm
Sweden introduced electronic timing and the first P.A. system.

1920

Antwerp
The 1920 Games were awarded to Antwerp for their suffering during WWI.

1924

Paris
The Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (Swifter, Higher, Stronger) was introduced.

1928

Amsterdam
Women were finally allowed to compete in gymnastics and athletics.

1932

Los Angeles
The Great Depression halved the competitors but 18 world records were broken.

1936

Berlin
The Games were infamous for Hitler's failed attempt to prove his theories of racial superiority.

1948

London
London saw the first participation of Communist countries.

1952

Helsinki
The Soviet Union entered for the first time, although their athletes were housed separately.

Melbourne

These were the first Games to be held in the southern hemisphere but due to quarantine laws, horse riding events were staged in Sweden.

Rome

Muhammad Ali gained international prominence by winning a boxing gold.

Tokyo

Judo and volleyball - the first team sport for women - were introduced.

Mexico City

Mexico City was a controversial choice because of the city's high altitude.

Munich

The Games took second place to the tragic events that saw 17 people dead.

Montreal

Romanian 14-year-old gymnast Nadia Comaneci was awarded the first-ever perfect score of 10.0.

Moscow

Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe fought it out in the 800m and 1,500m.

Los Angeles

A boycott led by the Soviet Union depleted the field but a record 140 nations still took part.

Seoul

Drugs reared their head when sprinter Ben Johnson was disqualified after winning the 100m.

Barcelona

Linford Christie sprinted to gold in the 100m and Sally Gunnell did the same in 400m hurdles.

Atlanta

Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent were Britain's only triumph of the Games.

Sydney

Generally considered to be the best-ever Games with 11 Golds for G.B.

Athens

The Olympics returned to its spiritual home of Athens and despite initial fears they put on a great show.
