How times have changed
Life has changed since the Queen came to the throne. In many ways we have "never had it so good" and it is interesting to compare how prices and wages have changed over the years.
During the last 50 years we have been through periods of both high and low inflation. Just to give you some idea a pound today would have been the equivalent of £0.06p and in 1977 the year of the Silver Jubilee it would have been £0.27. The rate of inflation between 1952 and 2000 was 1601%.
On the other hand if you had invested £100 over the last 50 years and we assumed an average interest rate of 7% it would now be worth £2,945.70. It it was only 25 years it would be worth £542.74 - which shows the value of compound interest!
One of the hot issues over the last few years has been how house prices have risen. Are you someone who has made a fortune because you bought years ago or are you now priced out of the market? Here we give a guide to how they have changed relative to wages.
