| WHAT WAS MEN'S FASHION LIKE IN THE 50'S?
Whilst women's clothes were being transformed from drab to glamour, men on the other hand were left with a very dull image even though personalities such as the Fonz depicted otherwise. The look for men in the 50's was often called "Ivy League" or preppy.
HAIRCUTS
For the famous ducktail haircut, men had to comb the hair back to the middle of the head, then with the end of a comb make a centre parting and apply lots of grease. If one sported the D.A. they were immediately seen as a rebel.
Hollywood loved this style but for the general public it was impractical. Instead, the infamous crew-cut (flat top) was the style for many young men.
The only other male style was the pink range when men began wearing pink shirts and ties. The cowboy look was also popular, influenced by the Westerns now seen on Television.
However, on the whole, when we hark back to the fashion of the Fifties for men we often compare it to the Fonz and Grease but as mentioned above, this couldn't have been further from the truth.
Their uniform consisted of grey, dark blue, dark brown and charcoal tones. Men were certainly left behind when it came to fashion as women moved away from this drab look.
