Jonathan hit wondrous form in 1995, taking triple jumping into a new era, sailing well beyond 18m at the European Cup, when with a wind just over the legal limit of 2 m/s he produced the first triple jumps ever over 60 ft 18.29m.

After taking the world record with 17.98 at Salamanca, he achieved the unprecedented feat of world records on his first two jumps in the World final in Gothenburg - 18.16 and 18.29, thus the first 18m and 60ft jumps with legal wind. He ended the year unbeaten in 14 competitions, was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the L'Equipe international Champion of Champions.

He had keyhole surgery on his left ankle at the end of the 1998 season, causing him to miss the Commonwealth Games, but remained the man to beat in the world of triple jumping and won 9 of his 12 competitions in 1999.

Again in 2000, he was the world number one and attained his dream of an Olympic gold medal when his third-round 17.71 proved far too good for the rest in Sydney. That improved the world best for the year that he had earlier set with 17.62 at Leverkusen.

He topped the world indoor rankings in 2001, but although jumping consistently well had to settle for silver at the World Indoor Championships with 17.26. Outdoors he leapt to the head of the world rankings with 17.53w at Bangor, 17.56 at Milan and 17.66 at Glasgow, and he won his fourth AAA title with 17.59. He then regained the World title with the world's top mark of the year, 17.92 in Edmonton for his fifth successive medal at this event, and followed that with four more wins to the Goodwill Games for an overall record of 19 wins and three second places in 2001.
