Indiana Jones whips up box office storm

29/05/2008 06:36

LONDON (Reuters) - Harrison Ford swept to the top of the box office over the weekend with the long-awaited third sequel of Indiana Jones, amassing a huge three-day total of 12.2 million pounds, according to Screen International.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" has been nearly two decades in the making and the latest epic, directed by Steven Spielberg, features communists rather than Nazis as the bad guys but critics largely agree the transition is seamless and the action as compelling as ever.

Staying in second place was "What Happens in Vegas," with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher as a couple living with the bittersweet consequences of a quickie marriage.

Last week’s No. 1, superhero caper "Iron Man," was down in third place, while "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," an Hawaii-based romantic comedy featuring Russell Brand was down one at four.

Fifth, also down one, was "Nim’s Island" with "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin, while "Speed Racer," a big-screen version of the 1960s TV series, was down at six from five.

Romantic comedy "Made of Honour", with "Grey’s Anatomy" heart-throb Patrick Dempsey as a playboy agonizing over marriage, was down one place at seven.

Also down one, at eight, was post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller "Doomsday" while staying at nine was "Caramel," the thoughts on life, love and motherhood of five women in a Beirut beauty salon.

At 10, down two places was gangster movie "In Bruges."
