SYDNEY (Hollywood Reporter) - The Smiths conquered Spain, Charlie retained his crown in Britain and "The Island" finally had its day in the sun as weekend estimates placed the domestic dud film No. 1 at the international box office.
"The Island" grossed an estimated $12.4 million (6.9 million pounds), taking its total to $84.8 million from 44 markets. A solid opening in France of $3.4 million earned the Michael Bay actioner the No. 1 spot. The Ewan McGregor-Scarlett Johansson film, made $418,300 in Belgium (expected No. 1), and $215,200 in Denmark (No. 1 ahead of opener "Herbie: Fully Loaded").
"The Island" held on to No. 1 in Mexico in its second week with $828,500, ahead of holdover "Bewitched" and opener "The Amityville Horror."

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" keeps pumping sweet success in the U.K., where it grossed $3 million in its fourth consecutive weekend at No. 1. The Johnny Depp movie debuted at No. 2 in Malaysia with $130,000, behind opener "Herbie."
During its second weekend, "Charlie" picked up an additional $1.1 million in Spain, and $1 million in Germany, in both cases, behind "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." "Charlie’s" $9.5 million weekend from 37 markets lifted the foreign total to $111.4 million.
"Herbie" claimed $6.2 million this weekend for a total of $51.5 million, driven by openings in smaller territories.
"Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s" No. 1 bow of $5 million in Spain the international total for the Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt action thriller to $150 million.
"The Skeleton Key" claimed top honors in Germany with $1.7 million, ahead of "Sin City’s" $1.4 million. In Australia, the Kate Hudson horror movie bowed to $810,000 to place No. 2 behind "Wedding Crashers" in its second weekend.
The $5 million weekend lifted the international tally for "Key" from 18 territories to $16 million.
"Bewitched" did its best to cast a spell over Britain but opened at No. 2 (behind "Charlie") with $1.9 million. The total for the romantic is now $13.7 million from 20 territories.
"Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" opened softly to $320,000 in Germany and $300,000 in the Netherlands, where the comedy was filmed. A $110,000 bow in Austria boosted weekend takings to a paltry $730,000.
"Madagascar" picked up an additional $5 million for a total of $266 million from all territories. Other cumulative totals included "Fantastic Four" with $134 million, "Sin City" with $40.3 million, "Dark Water" with $7.1 million, "The Interpreter" with $83 million, "War of the Worlds" with $338.2 million and "Robots" with $129.3 million.
