It's surely no coincidence that as Disney release Pirates of the Caribbean, arch-rivals Dreamworks follow suit with a swashbuckling adventure of their own in the guise of Sinbad: Legend of the Sevens Seas. But whereas Disney have gone for live action, Dreamworks have decided that, to properly capture the mystical world of Gods and Monsters, the animated route is the way to go.

Sinbad (Pitt), the most daring and notorious rogue ever to sail the seven seas, has landed himself in a spot of hot water. He is framed by Eris, the goddess of chaos for stealing one of the world's most priceless and powerful treasures - the Book of Peace.

Our hero is given the chance to retrieve the book and by so doing save the life of his childhood friend Proteus (Fiennes) who quite literally puts his neck on the line for his chum. Add to the mix Proteus' beautiful betrothed, Marina (Zeta-Jones) who accompanies Sinbad on his quest, the comic capers of of the ship's dog Spike and what you have is a pretty standard animated yarn.

That's not to say that the film doesn't have it's merits. While most of the animation is of the traditional 2D variety, there are glimpses of seamless blending between 2D and 3D computer graphics which breathe life into the goddess Eris. The action sequences complete with sea monsters and daring escapes, is guaranteed to keep youngsters especially on the edge of their seats.
