The original American Pie was written off as just another puerile teen flick, with the guys obsessed with sex and the girls obsessed with their looks. The fact that it went on to gross over $100 million assured a sequel, but would it be any good?
It turns out that American Pie 2 is good. Very good.
We rejoin the cast of the first film after their first year of college, returning home to spend the summer vacation with their buddies on the beach.
What follows is the expected blend of stupidity and toilet humour that fans will be all too familiar with. And the thing is, it works just as well as before. You can't help yourself and before long you'll be doubled up with laughter.
Writer Adam Herz has managed to weave in some clever and original jokes into his snappy script and these are delivered with some aplomb, particularly by Eugene Levy, Jim's cringingly embarrassing dad.
OK it's not art, in fact it is idiotic and slightly vulgar, but if you want a 90-minute blast of laugh-out-loud comedy you won't be disappointed. If you liked the original, you can be sure that you'll like the follow-up.
