Running time: 90 minutes
Starring: Chris Waitt, Hilary Waitt, Olivia Trench
Rating 6 out of 10
As the title suggests, documentary film-maker Chris Waitt is not really a hit with the girls. It's not that he can't get a girlfriend - his gangly, other-worldly charm seems to have always made this part of it relatively straightforward - but he has trouble holding on to them. In fact, every single woman he has ever been out with has dumped him, and now he has set out to make a film to try and figure out why. In order to do this, Waitt tries to discover the whereabouts of all of his previous amours and persuade them to talk to him on camera about why they got rid of him. Not an easy task and quite a lot of them are simply not up to it but his final product flits between being entertaining, self-indulgent, mind-boggling, dubious and touching.
Chris is blind to the very obvious reasons why he has consistent relationship problems: he's lazy, scruffy, childlike, unaware of others' feelings, selfish and self-obsessed. In short he needs help. Despite a number of people telling him the same thing again and again, he persists with a doe-eyed incredulity at hearing all the negatives.
When his material starts to stretch (i.e. he can't find anyone else willing to talk to him), Waitt veers into uncomfortable territory which sees him examining his erectile dysfunction. We are treated to a full-frontal assault when he visits a mistress in her dungeon and when he goes on a viagra binge he desperately roams the streets of London looking for someone to have sex with him.
Despite several moments of doubtful veracity - there are lots of contrived and cleverly edited moments which keep the humour at the fore - the film does end on a high when he meets a girl who might just be loopy enough to keep up with him. Overall it's probably better suited to a small screen experience.
