Film & TV - US Box Office

WHAT'S HOT AT THE U.S. BOX OFFICE

Week ending 11 May 2008

Iron Man showed its mettle, holding on easily to top spot for the second week running with an estimated $50.1m. The figure was down 49% on its record breaking opening, giving the Marvel comic-book hero a two-week domestic total of $177.1m and a worldwide tally of $276.2m. The Robert Downey starrer is already the year's top grossing film, overtaking Horton Hears A Who!'s $150m.

Speed Racer wasn't able to keep up with Iron Man , taking second place with $20.2m. With an estimated budget of $120m, a huge marketing campaign and the Wachowski Brothers directing, Speed Racer's opening was disappointing. Based on the 60s anime cartoon series, its debut was well down on the $48.5m opening of the brothers' last film, 2003's The Matrix Revolutions.

What Happens in Vegas came up trumps, debuting in third place with $20m. The romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher performed well, finishing just behind Speed Racer despite its considerably smaller budget of $35m. It also boasted a better screen average than Speed Racer with $6,220 at 3,215 sites compared with $5,604 at 3,606 screens. Though both were well down on Iron Man's average of $12,284 at 4,111 theaters.

Made of Honor had a dignified 49% drop from last week's debut. Slipping to fourth spot, the romantic comedy's $7.6m gave it a total $26.3m. Baby Mama added $5.8m to take its three-week tally to $40.4m while Forgetting Sarah Marshall reached $50.8m after its fourth weekend total of $3.8m. Redbelt whipped up $1.1m to round out the top ten. The David Mamet martial arts drama starring Tim Allen moved up from 41st spot last week for a two-week total of $1.2m. Overall the box office was up 16% on the corresponding period last year when Spider-Man 3 remained atop the box office for a second week running with $58.2m.

Next week Iron Man is liable to lose his grip on top spot with the release of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The question is whether the second in the Narnia series will top the $65.6m debut of 2005's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
