Michael Gambon came to London from Dublin at the age of 5 and was set on a career in engineering. But, having discovered the stage and been picked by Laurence Olivier for his fledgling National Theatre he decided instead for a life onscreen and on the boards, rising to become one of Britain's greatest actors.
